Podcast: Episode 62

After back-to-back, jam-packed podcasts we have to admit that this one is a little lighter. Maybe it's March Madness or the lack of real football or a couple months. Oh well. Here's what we have this week.

When you consider the NCAA is looking to ruin the basketball tournament and expand to 96 teams because of greed, how much do you think it will screw up a football tournament if we let them have it? That's right, plenty. Money always wins.

We also take an early look at the coaches on the hot seat and who has the best chance of saving their job and who should be sending out resumes. Coaches aren't the only ones on the hot seat. How would you like to be replacing Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford? Think there's a little pressure on John Brantley, Garrett Gilbert and Landry Jones? We also try to explain what Oregon's Mike Bellotti is doing by going to ESPN. Enjoy another show.

Podcast: Episode 58

We're glad to be back after a week off from the podcasting world. Phil and Tom needed a little rest, but now they are ready to look at some of the hot topics in college football.

We start with an evaluation of the coaching hires around the country and evaluate who will make the most immediate impact, who will be the best long-term hire and who is the worst hire. Next, we discuss all of the recruiting wars and player poaching by coaches. Is it not time to have an early signing date for college football, much like basketball and other sports? We then shift our focus to the next decade. The SEC dominated the football landscape during the 2000s, but can it continue its dominance in the teens? There's a good chance, but as conferences look to add new teams the chances are good the SEC will come back to the rest of the pack.

We tried to get through a show without mentioning Lane Kiffin, but we couldn't do it. Sorry guys. We also pick the college football program we would play for today if either of us were 18 and had a lick of talent. Where would you go? Enjoy the show.

Tune in Monday

We promise we'll be back Monday with a new college football podcast. We also promise to make it interesting. Would we have it any other way?

Podcast: Episode 57

We tried to take a week off from podcasting, but then USC, Pete Carroll and Lane Kiffin had to blow up this week.

Phil and Tom dissect the decisions of all three parties and where Tennessee goes from here in this impromptu podcast. Could the Vols go with Will Muschamp at Texas, Troy Calhoun at Air Force or throw everyone off and go an entirely different direction.

Speaking of Tennessee, what the heck was that athletic administration thinking by allowing the Traitor Kiffin to conduct a media conference at their facility. Bad call folks. So much for a week off. Enjoy the show.

Podcast update

To all of our loyal podcast listeners, we will not have our customary Wednesday show. Instead, Phil and Tom are getting together Friday so we can break down the National Championship game as well as other important college football news. So come back Friday for your weekly update from An 'Eye and an 'Eer.

Podcast: Episode 42

Thanks ACC for reminding us once again why no one should take you seriously until basketball season rolls around. Just when we thought Miami, Florida State or North Carolina might be considered BCS title contenders ... all three reminded us why no team from the ACC will ever when the championship (that includes you too Va Tech).

As painful as it was, both the 'Eye and the 'Eer gave Rich Rodriguez credit for Michigan's 4-0 start, but both agree that 1-3 Michigan State will probably win this weekend. Let's not forget about the potential interesting match ups this week - LSU-Georgia, USC-Cal and Oklahoma-Miami. We also have some fun at the expense of Tony Barnhart, Ron Zook and the Iowa Hawkeyes during Quick Hitters.

Podcast: Episode 33

While Tom can't wait for the start of the football season, Phil admits he could use a little more time to save up his energy (and money) for another season of Buckeyes football. However, both of our fearless podcasters have already identified a game during the first week that neither will miss (can you say Oregon at Boise State and Georgia at Okie State?). The guys differ on their opinion about a 13-year-old who has committed to play at Tennessee, while both understand Air Force's Troy Calhoun's complaint about the BCS. Oh yea, Tom gets his digs in on Rich Rodriguez and Bob Stoops again. Enjoy the show.

Podcast: Episode 32

Does the NCAA have any backbone left? We don't think so. With the weak penalties being handed out to Alabama and Florida State, USC shouldn't be too concerned about the Reggie Bush fiasco. Phil and Tom also discuss how Penn State is waxing the floor with Pitt in its own backyard and snatching top recruits from the WPIAL. We are also wondering how the Big Ten has three of the top 10 revenue-earning programs in the nation, but still suck. Sorry, but we also broke our own self-imposed rule about not talking about Notre Dame. We just can't help ourselves.

Podcast: Episode 31

Time to dissect Phil and Tom's preseason conference rankings (Phil totally trashes Tom's ACC picks). We also take a look at the potential of BCS busters joining BCS conferences and does that make sense, as well as the most over-rated and most under-rated coaches today. We also think the NCAA will uphold its decision to take away victories from Bobby Bowden, and that Our Boy Lane Kiffin may actually be crazy. Enjoy.

Podcast: Episode 30

The ACC and Pac-10 seem like an odd pairing, but the two coastal conferences just may form a new College Football network that will show just their games. Finally, Greg Paulus made a decision for his one year of football action. Phil and Tom also look at rising and declining conferences as well as a faux pas by the Sports Information Office at Notre Dame. Also, Phil peppers Tom with three quick hitters that involve WVU. Tune in to hear what he has to say about the Mountaineers.

Podcast: Episode 29

Who was supposed to babysit Joe Paterno this week? Whoever it was didn't do their job. The legendary coach was spouting off about expanding the Big Ten to 12 teams so they could have a championship game. One of his choices to join? Pitt, a school he won't schedule right now as a great non-conference matchup. We also evaluate the value of preseason College Football magazines like Athlon, Street & Smith and Phil Steele and the value of the Mock Drafts. Let's not forget, we also update our picks for the Fulmer Cup.

Don't worry ...

I know many of you were looking for our latest podcast today. Unfortunately our work schedules keep getting in the way. It looks like a good bet that Phil and Tom will connect on Friday. Stay tuned. It should be a hot show.

Ask us a question

Phil and Tom are less than a week away from their next podcast and they would love to answer questions from the fans. If there is something going on in College Football right now that you'd love to hear us discuss, please send us an email at eyeandeer@gmail.com.

Remember we won't discuss Charlie Weis or Notre Dame until either or both become relevant in College Football. However, we'd love to discuss tOSU or WVU.

Regards,

Phil and Tom

Podcast: Episode 26

With everyone mesmerized by March Madness, Phil and Tom provide some perspective on how this playoff system would not work for football. We also look at the Big 10 and Big East teams that face the biggest question marks this spring (HINT: Michigan and Louisville), and we make a pledge to not discuss Notre Dame football again until the Fighting Irish play a meaningful game. Our dynamic duo also do some rapid fire questions, including one on why the defending national champion Florida Gators are afraid to play The U.

Podcast: Episode 23

Has it really been two weeks already? Guess so because Phil and Tom are back in the studio with a new podcast for everyone. They're talking about the poor economy and the impact on College Football, Ole Miss and its 38 recruits, the potential of Jon Gruden landing on his feet at the collegiate level and poor Larry Coker. Hope you enjoy Episode 23.

No podcast? No problem

It's another podcast off week for Phil and Tom. So instead of talking, we tackle a few questions and give your our thoughts. Here we go:

As most of the nation's top recruits signed on the dotted line as part of National Signing Day today, how did West Virginia (Tom) and Ohio State (Phil) fare?

Tom: This may well be WVU's best recruiting class in decades. So a big tip of the cap to Doc Holliday and the rest of the coaching staff. However, the Mountaineers did lose one blue chipper when Pompano Beach (Fla.) Blanche Ely HS cornerback Michael Carter spurned the Mountaineers for Minnesota. I don't totally get this one, but it's a big loss. I believe Carter could have been the best signing of the day if WVU had snagged him. I'm still pleased with the class, though. There is no question that Chesapeake, Va., receiver Logan Heastie, Miramar, Fla., quarterback Eugene Smith and Baltimore running back Tavon Austin are the keys to this class. But WVU fans shouldn't overlook Smith's teammate and receiver Stedman Bailey, who could be a real star.

Phil: I've seen Ohio State's class ranked anywhere from No. 1 to No. 6 for whatever that's worth. The Buckeyes signed 25 and four are already enrolled in school. There was one big defection when CB/WR Justin Green changed his mind to sign with Illinois. That was a loss because Green was apparently a top-notch athlete, but other than that some very good players will become Buckeyes, including the top two players in Pennsylvania. I particularly like the offensive line class with Marcus Hall of Cleveland Glenville, Jack Mewhort of Toledo Central Catholic, Sam Longo of Bellbrook and Cory Linsley of Youngstown Boardman. Combine that with two other signees who could play up front in TE Reid Fragel of Grosse Pointe, Mich., and DT Adam Bellamy of Aurora and it's a more athletic group than what OSU has featured in recent years.

Staying in the Big 10, Penn State signed another strong class despite Joe Paterno not visiting a single high school this year. Yes, Paterno is a living legend and known everywhere, but at some point isn't this lack of mobility or maybe willingness to leave State College going to hurt the Nits?

Phil: It's not a killer, but it doesn't help. PSU isn't really a recruiting power and hasn't been since the mid-90s. Not to say they don't sign good players. But if you notice the inroads Pitt and now Ohio State have made in Western Pa., I think Paterno's lack of interest in recruiting, as well as his age, have made a difference.

Tom: He's fortunate to have the reputation around the northeast and assistant coaches who can recruit. But I have to think that his inability to fulfill a basic coaching duty will hurt if he coaches much longer. Since he's like a 115 now, JoPa only has a year or two left in him.

On last week's podcast we discussed the game we'd like to see WVU and Ohio State play on a regular basis. That was actually pretty easy for both of us to answer. But who on the schedule would we replace? Is it the Division I-AA opponent or someone else and why?

Tom: This is a tough call. I like WVU's non-conference slate for the most part. In 2009 the Mountaineers get home games with Colorado and Marshall, and a road contest with Auburn. So the Liberty game is an easy call from my perspective to drop. However, this is the type of game you schedule to work out the kinks, and WVU could use that next year with a lot of new faces on the field. So it would most likely have to be Auburn or Colorado in the future since those agreements are usually two-year deals and then they go off the books.

Phil: Realistically, Ohio State's schedule is never going to be more difficult than next year's out of conference slate with Navy, USC and New Mexico State. Personally, I'd prefer never seeing a I-AA team in Ohio Stadium again, even if those Youngstown State teams were better than some I-A teams. I guess I'd like to NOT see anymore Ohio MAC teams on the schedule. Those games mean everything to those schools and nothing to OSU. It's a lose-lose for the Buckeyes. And I'm paying $63 a ticket next year.

With today being signing day, of course there must be a recruiting champ. Depending on who the expert is doing the ranking, a number of school's can claim to be No. 1 in recruiting. Do these rankings really mean anything?

Phil: They do, but in a very vague, overarching way. Let's put it this way - it's better to be on or near the top than at the bottom. There is some semblance of truth to these rankings. Is there a big difference between being No. 1 and No. 10? Not really.

Tom: I would argue there's not much difference between being No. 1 and No. 30. It's too early to measure desire and heart of these 17 and 18-year-olds. I would much rather be the top class, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over being the 30th class if you feel you filled needs.

Podcast: Episode 22

After a longer-than-expected hiatus, we're back with another episode of An 'Eye and an 'Eer. College Football season never truly ends for Phil and Tom. Today we discuss the annoying development in recruiting that involves high school players trying to one up each other in how they announce their decision.

We also look at the best quarterback coming out of college and the Mountain West Conference's plea to be included in the Bowl Championship Series. We also give you our dream game for WVU and Ohio State.

Podcast on hold

The fans of An 'Eye and an 'Eer: College Football Podcast are spread out all over the world. However, Phil and I both reside in different parts of Ohio. In case you haven't noticed our weather is real crappy today.

So Phil is stuck in his cubicle in Columbus. Yes, he braved the frozen tundra on I-70 or 270 or whatever overly crowded road that gets him to work each day. Now that he is at work he can't come home at lunch to record the podcast.

My situation is a little different. Working at an institution of higher education, our campus was closed today because we are blanketed with a sheet of ice. So I can't access my computer as well.

Stay tuned. We'll get it done tomorrow or Friday.

Don't cry ... Podcast returns next week

We know many of you look forward to our weekly podcast, but during the offseason we'll do the podcast every other week. So tune in next Wednesday for a new podcast from Phil-shy and Tom.

Podcast: Episode 21

Really, the College Football season is over? Where did it go?

Well the Florida Gators are National Champs and it's time to go into the off season. Phil and Tom won't spend too much time talking about recruiting, but in this episode we will discuss a future that includes a playoff, make some stupid predictions for 2009, decide if Tim Tebow is about to become the most hated player in College Football history and what underclassmen have made the worst decision to come out early for the NFL Draft.

Oh yea, and we'll talk about that BCS Championship game a little. We will continue to do the podcast, but now we are going to every other week until late summer.
