Podcast: Episode 29

Who was supposed to babysit Joe Paterno this week? Whoever it was didn't do their job. The legendary coach was spouting off about expanding the Big Ten to 12 teams so they could have a championship game. One of his choices to join? Pitt, a school he won't schedule right now as a great non-conference matchup. We also evaluate the value of preseason College Football magazines like Athlon, Street & Smith and Phil Steele and the value of the Mock Drafts. Let's not forget, we also update our picks for the Fulmer Cup.

Fulmer Cup shakeup

While the latest Fulmer Cup rankings won't be posted until later this week over at EveryDayShouldBeSaturday.com, we noticed at An 'Eye and an 'Eer that the
rankings should see a shakeup after this weekend.

Here's the latest in off-season debauchery:

* Two Ohio State freshmen enjoy dabbling in the drug paraphernalia.

* Ryan Mallett, the former rocket-armed, but slow-footed quarterback at Michigan, decided to partake in a little underage drinking and got busted for public intox in Fayetteville, Ark. Mallett is the favorite to start for the Razorbacks this fall.

* Speaking of underage consumption, Nebraska tight end Ben Cotton was nabbed after he couldn't maintain his composure. Those 19-year-olds just can't hold their liquor.

* Iowa, which has not choice but to appear serious when its players run afoul of the law, has suspended freshman defensive back Shaun Prater after being charged with driving while trashed.

So the Buckeyes crack the rankings, while the Mountaineers have a quiet weekend in Morgantown (not counting Bob Huggins' bender after WVU lost to Cincinnati for a second consecutive season).

Fulmer Cup update

We spoke about the Fulmer Cup, the brainchild of the geniuses at EveryDayShouldBeSaturday, on the podcast yesterday. Since both Phil and I picked Tennessee to win the title this year thanks to the hands-off leadership and discipline of Lane Kiffin I thought I should check the latest standings.

While I stand behind my pick, it was interesting to see the Volunteers haven't cracked the list yet. (Graphic courtesy of EDSBS). Of course the Mountaineers didn't disappoint and have earned two points thanks to Jock Sanders.

Fulmer Cup predictions

Since we began this blog five months ago, 'Eye and I have gone to a new level of fanaticism in keeping up with the latest in college football. With the season complete I find new things to follow. I'm sure 'Eye was familiar with the Fulmer Cup, but it's new to me. It was created by the very popular and legendary college football blog Every Day Should Be Saturday.

To my surprise, WVU is the pre-offseason favorite to win this year's Fulmer Cup. Not really something to be proud of. This post by Miami Hawk Talk breaks down the potential Top 10 candidates in a real, and humorous manner. Have to admit, even I found it funny as they ripped the Mountaineers. 'Eye will be glad to know that Ohio State didn't land on the list, but The Big Ten has an impressive three teams in the running, including Michigan at No. 10.

So far, the Troy Trojans are in the lead for 2009.
