Rumblings across the nation

Here are some interesting news reports and blog posts I found today.

* The Charlie Weis honeymoon is officially over at Notre Dame. Jeff Carroll of the South Bend Tribune wrote, "Weis is a good, charitable man who was a successful NFL offensive coordinator. But if you do not have grave concerns at this point about his ability to steer a college program you are obstinately refusing to recognize what is right in front of your eyes. If your faith in his ability to motivate isn't shaken to the core, you are electing delusion."

* Funny how one win against an overachieving Minnesota team has everyone at The Detroit News speaking fondly of Rich Rodriguez today. OK, maybe it's just one column, but the paper spent the past week lambasting Rich-Rod for his testiness and coaching ability.

* Over at Third Saturday in Blogtober, the declare that Alabama has finally been tested and proved its mettle. They do have one interesting suggestion: "the next person LSU fans burn in effigy will be Jarrett Lee." Lee did struggle with four picks, but he can't be blamed for everything. Still, he's probably laying low today.

* Until Tennessee hires someone else, it appears North Carolina's Butch Davis won't escape the speculation. ACC Now states that Davis was asked again about his name surfacing in the Volunteers' search for Phil Fulmer's replacement. Davis said, "I addressed that last week, and there's no further discussion about that."

* While the rest of the college football nation realizes how insignificant Marshall is, fans of the Thundering Herd are calling for Mark Snyder's head. The former Ohio State assistant took over a program four years ago that was in disarray. He's made mistakes, but he seems to have turned a corner. Even after Saturday's OT loss at East Carolina. Anthony Hanshew's story in the Huntington Herald Dispatch shows some of the positives that Snyder is working with, but also you can hear the pressure he is under in his comments.

* On Bobby Bowden's 79th birthday, the Seminoles secured their 27th consecutive bowl game by routing Clemson 41-27.

* Entering the 12th week of the season, Oregon State controls its fate. If the Beavers can win out in the Pac-10 they'll probably face Penn State in the Rose Bowl, OSU's first trip to the game since the 1964 season.

* Donnie Webb of The Post-Standard is trying to figure out Daryl Gross' exit strategy with Coach Greg Robinson.

* Over at Ron Maly's blog, he says Iowa's win over Penn State was the best he has seen at Kinnick Stadium since Oct. 19, 1985, when the Hawkeyes, ranked No. 1, defeated second-ranked Michigan.

* At West By God Virginia, the message is simple: Fire Jeff Mullen.
